Why Most Ugandan Websites Are Slow (And How to Fix Yours)
The five reasons websites in Uganda load slowly on MTN and Airtel data, with fixes ranked by impact. Includes a free speed checklist.
We tested 50 Kampala business websites on a mid-range Android phone over MTN 4G. Average load time: over 9 seconds. Google says 53 percent of visitors leave after 3 seconds.
The five causes
- Uncompressed images. A 4 MB hero photo on a phone. Fix: compress, resize, use WebP or AVIF.
- Hosting far away with no CDN. Fix: put Cloudflare in front, or move to edge hosting.
- Too many plugins and scripts. Sliders, chat widgets, three analytics tools. Fix: remove what you do not use.
- No caching. Every visit rebuilds the page. Fix: enable full-page caching.
- Heavy themes. Page builders load megabytes of CSS and JavaScript. Fix: a lighter theme or a static rebuild.

Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Aim for a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds. If you are above 4 seconds, your site is costing you customers.
